Why the name Spurgeon Baptist Association of Churches?

The name, Charles Haddon Spurgeon, exemplifies the kind of pro-active ministry we desire to emulate as an association of churches.

Spurgeon believed emphatically in the supremacy of preaching and the sufficiency of Scripture. No preacher in history has had his sermons so widely printed, distributed, and read. Almost 4,000 of Spurgeon’s sermons are in print. He pioneered many missionary, evangelistic, and benevolent efforts in outreach. The Tabernacle was open from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. each day carrying out 66 different ministries. Spurgeon established the Pastors College; a colportage society that provided books and tracts to ministers at little or no cost. He established an orphanage and well organized Sunday school.

C. H. Spurgeon and his church’s ministry began scores of missions in and around London and pastors from Spurgeon’s College started hundreds of churches in England and around the world. There were almost as many attending Spurgeon’s mission outreaches in London on a given Sunday as were attending the Metropolitan Tabernacle’s Sunday morning service.

During the Downgrade Controversy, Spurgeon stood steadfast and worked tirelessly in defense of the faith.

Finally, Spurgeon’s balance between strong Biblical theology and evangelical outreach epitomizes our goals as an association of churches.
